John Lewis Roof Garden Oxford Street

The nations favourite retailer, John Lewis asked Tony to transform the rooftop area of their flagship Oxford Street store into a roof garden to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the stores opening. The brief was to create what is ultimately a lush and colourful garden that includes lots of elements found in traditional British gardens but with a modern twist. Tony also used the garden as a place to show John Spedan Lewis’s love for nature and gardening incuding wild flower meadows, a recreation of a green house from the companies Longtock Estate and the inclusion of nectar rich planting.

The space had to be versatile and durable to withstand the thousands of visitors that will enjoy the garden over the summer. Elements of flexibility and functionality also had to be designed in to the garden to cater for different events working in partnership with brand communications agency ‘PrettyGreen’. The garden hosts a pop up restaurant with award winning chefs, a Juice and Coffee bar, World Cup parties and open air cinema nights.

From the client:

“ PrettyGreen’s high-profile brief to build a garden which celebrated 150 years of John Lewis on their Oxford Street store rooftop required a horticultural partner with vision. Commissioning Tony Woods was the best decision we made as he guided our design team with his passion, knowledge and creativity to develop a piece that really surpassed expectations. He has created a garden that will continually flourish over 6 months, with a new element every week to constantly deliver surprise and delight for customers and partners alike.

Not only has he delivered a masterpiece garden but his strong customer management and flexibility ensured the process has been smooth. The ability to also understand the complexities of working commercially ensured that the build and maintenance process of working with a large team of stakeholders was extremely well-managed.

We are looking forward to the next project…”
